August 2026 - A Message from GSGP Chair Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro
This year, as America celebrates the 250th anniversary of our nation’s independence, I believe we should remember those who came before us and take lessons from their work to protect our fundamental freedoms and advance the cause of justice. That same spirit defines the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Region today. Americans and Canadians have fought alongside each other for generations – and our two countries are rooted in the ideals of freedom and opportunity for all.
Our states and provinces share more than a border. We share supply chains that power North America, waterways that connect communities and commerce, and an obligation to leave this region stronger than we found it. The relationship between the United States and Canada is one of the world's most successful partnerships and nowhere is that partnership more important than here in the Great Lakes.
As Chair of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors & Premiers, I have worked alongside my fellow Governors and Premiers who understand that progress does not stop at our borders. In June, I had the privilege of joining many of you at the US-Canada Summit in Toronto to strengthen the historic ties between our two countries and ensure our economies grow, we invest in innovation, and we welcome visitors from across the border to benefit Pennsylvanians and Canadians alike.
Together, we're expanding trade and tourism, protecting our shared waters, strengthening transportation networks, and preparing our communities for the future. Our shared success depends on finding common ground and delivering real results.
GSGP is committed to that collaborative approach. We bring people together to solve problems, attract investment, and strengthen international relationships. We will continue building an economy that can compete globally, conserve the natural resources that define this region, and demonstrate that our strong bond is still this region’s most powerful tool.
The Great Lakes St. Lawrence region has always helped shape North America's future, and I know our best days are still ahead. I believe our best path forward is one where America and Canada stand together to address the challenges we face, create economic opportunity, and advance the cause of freedom.
Sincerely,
Josh Shapiro
